About Vasko Obscura
My Story, From a Camera in My Father’s Hands to 20+ Years Behind My Own
Hello, my name is Vasko Obscura, and I’m a Toronto photographer, YouTuber, and photography educator with more than 20 years of professional experience behind the camera. My journey into photography started when I was young. My father was an architect who also moonlighted as a photographer to explore his creative side. As a kid, he would take me along on photo shoots and walks where he let me use his camera. Those early moments, learning about light, composition, and technique while reviewing photos together, sparked a passion that has stayed with me my entire life. When my father retired, he gave me his Leica R4s, the camera that truly ignited my love for photography. I still have it today, and it reminds me where everything began.
I later studied Mass Communications at York University, originally planning to pursue a career in advertising. But somewhere along the way I realized something important, I didn’t want to be the person creating advertisements, I wanted to be the one creating the images. That realization led me into professional photography. I started my freelance photography business in 2005, and since then I’ve worked across a wide range of genres including, weddings and destination weddings, portrait photography, corporate photography and headshots, product and advertising photography, glamour photography and editorial work. Over the years my work has taken me to incredible locations across Toronto, the Caribbean, and Europe, while helping clients capture meaningful moments and powerful visual stories.
Photography has always been more than just a profession for me. It’s a lifelong craft that continues to challenge and inspire me every day.
Why I Teach Photography (And Who This Community Is For)
Teaching photography is something I genuinely love. After more than two decades working as a professional Toronto photographer, I’ve learned that photography can feel complicated when you're first starting out. Cameras, lenses, lighting, editing, and composition can seem overwhelming, and there is a lot of information to absorb all at once. My goal is to simplify photography and help people understand both the creative and technical sides in a way that actually makes sense.
Through my website tutorials and my YouTube channel, I share teachable content, insights, and real-world experience to help photographers at every stage improve their skills. Whether you’re a beginner learning how to use your first camera, a hobbyist looking to take better photos and understand photography fundamentals, a creator or videographer wanting to improve your visual storytelling, or even an experienced photographer searching for new ideas and inspiration, this community is built to help you grow. To stay connected with the community, sign up for the newsletter and subscribe to the YouTube channel so you never miss new photography tutorials, videos, and behind the scenes content.
On this webpage you’ll find lessons on photography fundamentals, camera settings, lighting techniques, and creative composition. I also share lens reviews, gear insights, real world shooting techniques drawn from professional experience, behind the scenes looks at photo shoots and creative projects and my personal favorite sub-genre, vintage lenses. My goal isn’t just to teach photography, it’s to help you become a more confident and creative photographer. 📷
My Passion for Creating Photography Content on YouTube
My passion for photography eventually expanded into video, which led me to start a YouTube channel dedicated to photography education, camera reviews, and creative techniques. What began as a way to experiment with videography quickly evolved into something much bigger. Today, my YouTube channel has become a place where photographers from around the world come to learn photography, explore new gear, and improve their creative skills.
On the channel, I share photography tutorials, camera and lens reviews, creative photography techniques, and behind the scenes insights from real photo shoots. I also discuss photography gear honestly and share lessons learned from more than 20 years of professional experience as a Toronto freelance photographer. My goal as a YouTuber and content creator is simple: to help photographers learn faster, avoid common mistakes, and stay inspired to keep creating. And hay if there are any other Toronto YouTubers out there reach out and say hi. Maybe we can colab on a video and make some cool content.
Photography is one of the most rewarding creative skills you can develop, and building a community of photographers who are passionate about improving their craft is incredibly fulfilling. If you enjoy learning photography, discovering new camera gear, and improving your skills behind the lens, I invite you to subscribe to my YouTube channel and explore the photography tutorials. New videos and lessons are always on the way, and I’d love to have you be part of the community. 📷
