GVM Ziptile Z200B LED Light Review | Features, Pros & Cons
Welcome to my review of the GVM Ziptile Z200B, a slim bi-color LED video light designed around a modular, zip-together concept. The idea is simple and genuinely clever, each light features a zipper system that allows multiple Ziptile units to be physically connected, creating a larger, more powerful light source. Honestly what a great idea especially if you are shooting larger products.

On its own, the Z200B is compact, lightweight, and easy to transport, making it appealing for creators who work in tight spaces or need a portable lighting solution on the go. GVM also offers several Ziptile sizes, so you can choose the light that best fits your needs.
The Z200B includes a generous 34-foot power cable, giving you plenty of flexibility on set. If that still isnât enough, the light can also be powered via a V-Mount battery, which is a welcome option for mobile or location shoots. It supports app control, delivers high color accuracy, and comes with a custom-fit diffuser and grid. On paper, this light checks a lot of boxes and looks like a fantastic add to any kit.
Unfortunately, real-world use tells a very different story.
One of the first issues becomes apparent when using the diffuser. The supplied diffuser blocks access to the zipper system, meaning that if you plan to link multiple Ziptile lights together, the productâs main selling point, you wonât be able to use the diffuser at all. This feels like a major design oversight. Also worth mentioning the light doesnât get ver hot so in theory you could strap a bedsheet to it and use that as a defuser.
The zippers themselves also present a problem. The metal zipper tabs are surprisingly loud, producing an annoying jingling sound whenever the light is moved. Noise becomes an even bigger issue when you factor in the controller unit, which features an internal fan that is clearly audible from up to 15 feet away. For video production, especially in quiet recording environments, this is a serious inconvenience. The metal zipper tabs can be cut off and replaced with some some string but I donât see a clear solution for the noisy controller other than to hide it on something like a camera backpack to high the sound.
However, the most significant issue, and the one I consider a deal breaker, is the mounting system. During my testing, the light dismounted and fell multiple times. There is no secondary safety mechanism, such as a safety cable or locking pin, to prevent this from happening. This makes the light unreliable and, more importantly, dangerous on set.
Because of this, I canât wholeheartedly recommend the GVM Ziptile Z200B. A falling light isnât just an inconvenience, itâs a liability. On a professional set, it could cause injury or damage valuable equipment or product, potentially opening the door to legal issues. Even for small creators working on YouTube or TikTok, if this light falls and breaks, youâre looking at a loss of $500 USD.
If youâre looking for a powerful video light and donât need a lightweight and portable solution I strongly recommend the GVM SD650B Pro Video Light. Itâs only $300 more expensive and gives you 650 watts of power instead of only 300 watts. This thing truly packs a punch and can easily light up a whole studio. When GVM reached out to me to review this light, I was genuinely excited. On paper, the Ziptile Z200B felt like exactly what I was looking for, a slim, modular light designed for tight spaces. And if GVM were to release a revised version that addresses the mounting, noise, and accessory design issues, this could easily become a fantastic addition to any creatorâs lighting kit.
As it stands, the concept is excellent, but the execution makes it difficult to recommend. I sincerely hope GVM refines this product and relaunches it. I think it has a lot of potential.
