NISI Mist Filters vs. Tiffen Pro Mist Filters (What You Need to Know)
Mist filters have become one of the most popular tools for photographers and filmmakers looking to add character and atmosphere to their images. But not all mist filters behave the same way. In this post, I’m breaking down what mist filters actually do, how they affect your image, and my real-world impressions after testing NiSi Black Mist filters and Tiffen Pro Mist filters. If you want to see side-by-side visual comparisons, make sure to check out my full YouTube video here.
What Is a Mist Filter?
A mist filter (often called a diffusion filter) is designed to subtly alter how light behaves in your image. Instead of producing a clinically sharp, high-contrast look, a mist filter:
Softens highlights
Creates halation (a glow around light sources)
Reduces digital sharpness
Smooths out skin tones
Adds a more cinematic or “film-like” aesthetic
This is especially useful with modern lenses, which tend to be extremely sharp and sometimes feel a bit too “digital.”
Why Use a Mist Filter?
There are two main reasons creators use mist filters:
1. Halation (Glow Around Light)
Bright light sources, like windows, lamps, or practical lights, bloom softly, creating a cinematic glow that feels more organic and less harsh.
2. Skin Diffusion
Mist filters gently soften skin texture, helping reduce the appearance of pores, wrinkles, and blemishes without fully blurring the image. It’s a subtle effect when used correctly, but incredibly powerful.
🧠 Most filter brands produce diffusion filters with different strengths. 1/8th being the weakest and a full 1 being the strongest.

NiSi Black Mist Filters (Key Takeaways)
NiSi’s Black Mist filters stand out for a few reasons:
Stronger overall effect at comparable strengths
More noticeable halation and diffusion
Slight reduction in contrast, especially in darker areas
Colors appear more vibrant and saturated
Excellent color accuracy thanks to their “True Color” technology
In real-world use, these filters tend to create more of a hazy, atmospheric look, almost like a built-in fog effect. They’re especially interesting if you want a stylized, dreamy aesthetic straight out of camera.
Tiffen Pro Mist Filters (Key Takeaways)
Tiffen’s Pro Mist filters have been an industry standard for years, and for good reason.
More controlled halation
Better contrast retention (blacks stay black)
More subtle overall effect
Slight warm color shift in some cases
Very natural-looking skin diffusion
These filters tend to preserve the integrity of the image while adding just enough softness to take the digital edge off.
🧠 TIffen make a verify of diffusion filters and hybrid filters with diffusion. Their Pro Mist line creates good haleation. Their Black Pro Mist line creates good halation but also maintains contrast in the black. They also make hybrid filters like the Warming Black Pro Mist Filters which create Halation but also a warming tone over your images.

Strength Matters (A Lot)
One thing that became very clear during testing, not all “strength ratings” are equal across brands.
For example:
A NiSi 1/8 can feel closer to a Tiffen 1/4 strength filter.
A NiSi 1/4 can be quite intense depending on the lighting and feel closer to a Tiffen 1/2 strength filter.
This is especially important when shooting:
Backlit scenes
High-contrast environments
Scenes with strong light sources
👎 The down side
In those situations, stronger mist filters can quickly become overpowering. In my testing so far it seems that the NISI filters are 1 stop over powered compared to Tiffen filters with the same strength value. This is unfortunate for me because the Tiffen 1/8th is my most used filter and NISI clearly doesn’t have a filter that has a comparable look.
Color Accuracy vs Contrast
One of the most interesting findings:
NiSi filters maintain more accurate color (less color shift) and often appear more saturated
Tiffen filters tend to preserve contrast better, especially in shadows and blacks
This creates a bit of a trade-off:
NiSi = cleaner color, more atmosphere
Tiffen = stronger contrast, more controlled look
Can You Fix It in Post?
Yes, mostly. If you’re shooting:
RAW photos
LOG or RAW video
You can adjust:
Contrast
Saturation
White balance
So even if a filter leans one way, you can often shape the final image in post. That said, starting with a look you already like will always save time, especially for fast-paced work like weddings or client shoots.
Which Mist Filter Should You Choose?
There isn’t a single “best” option here. It really comes down to your style:
If you want a clean, cinematic look with controlled glow, you’ll likely prefer Tiffen
If you want a stronger, dreamier, more stylized image, NiSi might be more your vibe
Also worth considering:
NiSi filters are generally more affordable, especially in larger sizes
Their True Color technology can help keep colors consistent across different cameras and filters
Final Thoughts
Mist filters are one of the easiest ways to transform your image without touching your camera settings. Whether you prefer subtle diffusion or a more atmospheric look, both NiSi and Tiffen offer compelling options, it just depends on how you want your images to feel.
