Canon nFD 135mm f2.8 - Urban Windows Footage

If you’re a vintage lens enthusiast like me, you’re always looking for an excuse to put classic glass back into rotation. Recently, I shot a full video for my Urban Windows YouTube channel using the Canon nFD 135mm f/2.8 paired with the Canon EOS R5 Mark II, and the results are pretty cool at least to my eye.

I filmed this clip in Canon C-Log and completed a the color grade in post. What stood out immediately was how well the nFD 135mm f/2.8 renders color. There’s a subtle vintage warmth and nostalgic character that modern lenses often polish away. The contrast isn’t overly clinical, and highlights roll off in a way that feels organic and cinematic.

Vintage Lens Character in Modern 4K/8K Video

Adapting vintage FD glass to a modern RF mount body like the EOS R5 Mark II creates an interesting blend of old and new. You get the resolution, dynamic range, and codec flexibility of a cutting-edge mirrorless camera, combined with the rendering style of a 1980s telephoto prime.

The Canon nFD 135mm f/2.8 delivers:

  • Pleasant subject separation at f/2.8

  • Natural, slightly muted color tones

  • A classic contrast profile that grades beautifully in C-Log

For a vintage telephoto lens, sharpness is surprisingly strong in the center, especially for video work. It holds up well even on a high-resolution sensor like the R5 Mark II, making it a great option for filmmakers who want character without sacrificing too much detail.

Why I’m Using Vintage Lenses on Urban Windows

I’ve decided to start creating more content for Urban Windows using vintage lenses, partly because I love them, and partly because it gives me a creative reason to keep exploring these classics. There’s something deeply satisfying about pairing manual focus glass with modern digital video workflows. Only problem is my Urban Windows content is usually shot in the rain and well these old lenses are not waterproof.
