Fujinon WCL-X100 II Mini Review - The Ultimate Wide-Angle in Your Pocket

Fujinon WCL-X100 II

If you shoot with the Fujifilm X100V or any camera in the X100 lineup, you already know how special that fixed 23mm lens is. It delivers a classic 35mm full-frame equivalent field of view that works beautifully for everyday photography, but there are plenty of situations where you just need something wider. Whether you’re shooting street scenes, travel, architecture, or environmental portraits, having that extra width can completely change how you tell a story. That’s exactly where the Fujinon WCL-X100 II comes in, offering a simple and effective way to expand your creative possibilities without switching systems.

This isn’t just a basic add-on, it’s a purpose-built accessory designed to integrate seamlessly with the X100 system. It transforms your field of view into a 28mm full-frame equivalent while preserving the compact, minimalist, rangefinder-style shooting experience that makes these cameras so enjoyable to use. And just like its sibling, the Fujinon TCL-X100 II, what really stands out isn’t just what it does, but how well it’s built and how naturally it feels in the hand, as if it were always meant to be part of the camera. This mini review is going to cover the physical attributes of this lens. If you’re looking for more of an optical review with image samples read this post next.

Price

This lens sells for around $450 USD and to be perfectly honest it’s not worth that money. It doesn’t have any AF motors, switches or moving parts. It’s simply a housing that holds some lens elements. So let me save you some money 💰, I recommend waiting to buy this lens when it’s on sale or looking for a copy on the used market. —> Click here to check the current price on Amazon.

🎯 Pro Tip:
There isn’t anything complex about this lens attachment so buying it used shouldn’t be complicated if you’re new to buying used lenses. Make sure the screw threads at the front and back are not damaged and the lens elements are not scratched and you should be good to go.

First Impressions & Design Philosophy

The Fujinon WCL-X100 II feels like it was designed alongside the X100 cameras from the very beginning. It takes the native 35mm equivalent field of view and expands it into a wider 28mm perspective, one of the most versatile focal lengths for street, travel, environmental photography, and family get togethers.

What I love about 28mm is how immersive it feels. It pulls more of the scene into your frame without feeling overly distorted, making it ideal for storytelling, architecture, and capturing atmosphere. And the best part is that the WCL-X100 II delivers that wider view without disrupting the core shooting experience that makes the X100 series so enjoyable.

If I’m being perfectly honest, I wish this lens was a 24mm or 20mm equivalent. Going from a 35mm to a 28mm perspective is nice but it’s not a huge difference. Fingers crossed maybe in the future Fujifilm will make a 20mm lens converter. That would be fun.

Visually speaking, this attachment is a perfect match. Available in both black and silver, it blends seamlessly with your camera body. Once mounted, it doesn’t feel like an accessory, it feels like part of the camera which I do appreciate.

💡 If you are into street photography I would recommend getting the black body with the black lens. In my experience the silver body is a head turner and will get you noticed more often than not.

Build Quality & Materials

The build quality here is exactly what you’d expect from Fujinon, solid, precise, and premium. The lens features a metal construction that feels durable and confidence-inspiring. There’s no flex, no looseness, and nothing about it feels cheap. Even the threading is smooth and well-machined, giving you that satisfying, deliberate feel when attaching it to the camera. It’s one of those pieces of gear that you can trust to hold up over time, whether you’re shooting casually or taking it on more demanding outings.

Weather Sealing

Fujifilm made a bonhead choice with their X100V and X100VI cameras. Both cameras are only weather sealed when you screw a filter over the front element forcing you to buy additional accessories for an already overpriced camera IMO. Now here is the thing, in order to mount the WCL X100-II or the TCL X100-II you need to remove the front filter. And this brings me to the second bonehead movie my Fujifilm: I have checked the interwebs and there is no official literature from Fujifilm stating whether this lens is weather sealed or not, so I can’t tell you it’s weather sealed. However, I can say this: I have taken my X100VI out in the rain with the TCL-X100 II and WCL-X100 II attached to my camera and haven’t had any issues with water getting into the lens or the camera. So “unofficially” yes I would say that, in my experience, these lens attachments keep your camera weather sealed.

Size, Weight & Handling

The WCL-X100 II strikes a really nice balance between size and usability.

  • Weight: ~150g

  • Compact, short profile design

Mounted on the camera, it adds a bit of front weight, but not enough to make the setup feel unbalanced. If anything, it gives the camera a slightly more substantial feel in the hand. It does push the X100 out of true pocketable territory, but it’s still incredibly easy to carry. I’ve had no problem throwing it into a small bag or even keeping it in a jacket pocket when I’m not using it. Because this lens makes the camera more font heavy and the X100 series cameras have a slippery grip I would recommend picking up a thumb grip. The thumb grip makes your camera easier to hold. Screw-On Mount Experience

Like the TCL version, the WCL-X100 II uses a threaded screw-on mount that attaches directly to the front of the fixed lens. This is one of my favorite aspects of the design. There’s something very tactile and intentional about physically threading the lens on. It aligns perfectly with the slower, more deliberate shooting style that the X100 series encourages. Once mounted, it feels secure and solid, no wobble, no play. However, that being said it’s important to understand that switching lenses is a slower process. You have to unscrew your font filter, them put it in your pocket then take the rear lens cap off the WCL and screw it onto the front of your camera. The point I’m making here is that if you want to move fast with this kit you have to visualize what you want to shoot before it happens and setup your camera before the shot.

Smart Camera Integration

One of the most impressive features of the Fujinon WCL-X100 II is how seamlessly it integrates with the camera. When mounted on bodies like the Fujifilm X100V and X100VI, the camera automatically detects the lens and adjusts settings accordingly. There’s no need to dive into menus or manually select conversion modes, it just works. That kind of frictionless experience is exactly what makes the X100 system so enjoyable to shoot with. This only happens with the version II of these lenses. The older lenses don’t have this feature.

Optical Construction (Design Overview)

From a design standpoint, the WCL-X100 II is purpose-built for the X100 system.

  • Multi-element optical construction

  • Specifically engineered for the 23mm lens

  • Designed to maintain the original rendering characteristics

This isn’t a generic wide-angle adapter—it’s a dedicated optical solution that works in harmony with the camera’s native lens.

Filter Thread & Compatibility

The WCL-X100 II also retains front filter compatibility, which is a huge advantage.

  • Standard front filter thread

  • Compatible with ND, polarizers, and diffusion filters

This means you don’t lose any creative flexibility when using the lens, which is something I always look for in accessories like this.

Real-World Portability

This is where the WCL-X100 II really proves its value.

It’s compact enough to bring anywhere, quick to attach, and easy to integrate into your shooting workflow. I don’t always leave it mounted, but I almost always bring it along.

That flexibility is what makes it such a useful tool—it expands your options without adding complexity.

Final Thoughts

The Fujinon WCL-X100 II feels like a natural extension of the X100 system.

It’s beautifully built, thoughtfully designed, and incredibly satisfying to use. More importantly, it enhances the shooting experience without taking away from what makes the X100 series so special.

If you’re looking to go wider without leaving the simplicity of the X100 ecosystem, this is one of the best upgrades you can make.
