Perceptual Realism and Bokeh - Why Modern Movies Visually Suck

WOW check out this video by Like Stories of Old. I clicked on the thumbnail on a whim and well now I’m a new subscriber. The narrator talks about a lot of interesting things in this video and it’s really worth watching if you are into the art of filmmaking or photography.

The most interesting point he brings up in this video is something near and dear to my heart as a photographer, bokeh. As a photographer bokeh is great for subject separation and removing distractions from the background of an image. That’s why I love my 85mm f1.2 but is bokeh ruining modern movies? The narrator brings up a very interesting point. When bokeh is used inappropriately in video does it take away from the perceptual realism of a movie and thus withhold our subconscious connection to the story we are visually interpreting? It’s an interesting and thought provoking idea. Hope you learned something interesting about your craft from this video.

Cheers
