Canon RF 85mm f/1.2 L + EOS R5 Mark II: The Perfect 85mm Compression for Cinematic Urban Video

For this scene on my Urban Windows Sleep Sounds channel, I shot with the Canon RF 85mm f/1.2L USM mounted on the Canon EOS R5 Mark II and it perfectly demonstrates why the 85mm focal length is so special.

Why 85mm Is Such a Beautiful Focal Length

The 85mm focal length sits in that sweet spot of short telephoto compression. It gently pulls background elements forward, subtly flattening perspective without feeling overly dramatic. Unlike a 200mm or 300mm lens, where compression becomes intense and visually obvious, 85mm offers something more refined. It adds just enough depth compression to:

  • Make urban environments feel layered

  • Bring background details closer without overwhelming the subject

  • Create a natural but slightly surreal rendering

  • Maintain spatial clarity in video

There’s something undeniably cinematic about how an 85mm renders a scene. It doesn’t scream “telephoto.” It whispers it.

The Best Portrait Lens But Also Incredible for Urban Video

In my opinion, 85mm is the best portrait focal length ever made. It flatters facial features, creates separation, and delivers beautiful subject isolation, especially at f/1.2. But what often gets overlooked is how powerful 85mm can be for urban cinematography. When shooting city scenes, I’m not looking for aggressive distortion or dramatic perspective exaggeration. I want calm. I want balance. I want realism with just a touch of visual poetry. The slight compression of 85mm does exactly that.

  • Buildings feel closer together

  • Background lights feel more immersive

  • Motion feels smoother and more intentional

  • The scene gains a subtle dreamlike quality

It’s not extreme. It’s controlled. And that restraint is what makes it so powerful.

Final Thoughts: 85mm Is the Perfect Subtle Cinematic Lens

If 35mm is immersive and 200mm is dramatic, 85mm lives beautifully in between.

It compresses just enough.
It isolates just enough.
It elevates a scene without overpowering it.

For portraits, it’s legendary.
For urban video work, it’s quietly magical.
