Capturing Life's Moments: The Cheeky Perks and Puzzles of a Photographer's Career

In a world where everyone's a "photographer" thanks to the smartphone revolution, making a living through the art of photography might sound as fantastical as a unicorn sighting. It's a paradoxical mix of challenging hurdles and a dash of pure, unadulterated joy. Being a photographer is a bit like navigating a maze, challenging but incredibly rewarding. What is life really like as a professional photographer? After 20+ years, I share the lessons, challenges, and unforgettable moments behind the lens. In this blog post I’m going to share some of my thoughts on being a photographer. Maybe some of my experiences will help out or inspire the next generation of shooters.

1. Mastering the "Art" of Income

In the age of Instagram filters and pixel-perfect selfies, becoming a professional photographer can sometimes feel like you're riding a unicycle through a tornado. But this isn't necessarily a bad thing. In a world where everyone owns a camera, the demand for quality photography is higher than ever. And when I say quality I don’t mean good quality I mean quality as in being able to capture someone’s authentic character. If you've got the skills and unique perspective to match, you can turn that artistry into a profitable career. The big catch phrase in the industry right now is authenticity. Work that into your shooting style and you’ll do well.

2. Portfolio Pursuits: It's All About You!

One of the most exciting aspects of being a photographer is building your portfolio. It's like having a visual diary of your life's adventures, except you're the star of the show. Whether you're into mesmerizing landscapes, candid street shots, or intimate portraits, your portfolio becomes a gallery of your passions. And, as you improve, it's a constant source of pride and accomplishment. The thing with a portfolio is this. Your portfolio is your promise to clients. You’re saying this is my creative style, when you hire me this is what I can do for you.

3. It's Fun Work, Not Hard Work

Remember the adage, "Do what you love, and you'll never work a day in your life"? Well, that's precisely what it feels like when you get paid to produce photos you adore. Sure, lugging around heavy equipment and braving the elements isn't always a walk in the park. Still, every click of the shutter feels like a burst of creativity, a moment captured in time, and a job well done. When you get to that point you know you’ve made it. But before you get there be prepared to work. Honest facts here. You’ll spend 5% of your time taking photos the other 95% of the time is emails, editing, chasing leads, emails, editing, branding, posting on socials, emails. It’s a grind in the beginning but once you have your stable of clients it gets much easier.

4. Making Memories: Your Work Lives On

Photographers are the memory keepers. We capture the fleeting moments that would otherwise disappear into the abyss of forgotten experiences. The satisfaction of knowing your work will be cherished and remembered for generations is unlike any other feeling. You're not just creating art; you're making history. It’s kind of a poetic job when you think about it like that. :)

5. Creativity Knows No Bounds

Being a photographer means pushing the boundaries of creativity every single day. Whether it's experimenting with new techniques, finding unique angles, or chasing after the perfect lighting, it's a never-ending adventure. Plus, there's always something new to learn in this ever-evolving field. And trust me on that last point. Even after 20 years I still feel like there is more to learn.

6. The Community: Where Photogs Unite

Photographers have a unique camaraderie. It's not a competition but a collective journey of passion and exploration. It's a world where everyone is both a teacher and a student, sharing insights, critiquing work, and providing endless inspiration. The photography community is like a big, eclectic family, and the family portraits are fantastic! hahahaha. If you’re just starting out find a community and have fun. There’s nothing like you and your shutter squad strolling down the street with cameras in hand. It’s a great feeling.

7. You're a Visual Storyteller

Every photo you take tells a story. You're not just snapping pictures; you're capturing the emotions, the energy, the essence of the moment. It's a superpower that allows you to freeze time and evoke emotions in people who see your work. I think that’s what we’re all striving for. That’s kind a the Holy Grale of photography. Telling a story with an image. Practice that.

8. Celebrating Individuality

Photography allows you to embrace your individuality and showcase your perspective on the world. No two photographers see the world the same way, and that's what makes this profession so diverse and exciting. It's all about celebrating what makes you unique. Remember there is no such thing as best in a world of creativity there is only the journey.

9. The Joy of Problem Solving

Photography often involves solving real-world problems. From dealing with challenging lighting conditions to coaxing the perfect pose out of a reluctant subject, photographers become masters of adaptability. This problem-solving aspect can be both a challenge and a source of satisfaction. Someone once gave me some great advice and now I share it with you. No matter what you do, life will always put up wall a somewhere. An obstacle you have to overcome. There is always a lesson to learn. So just go into every gig knowing that there will be a wall and be mentally ready to overcome it.

10. A Glimpse into Other Worlds

Photographers have the unique privilege of stepping into other people's lives, cultures, and experiences. Whether you're shooting a travel documentary or capturing a wedding in a foreign land, you're given a front-row seat to the richness and diversity of human existence. This truly is one of the great perks of photography. I remember I was asked to shoot an event and there I was standing beside Aga Khan IV. I got to photograph him and then I had to shoot his presentation to a group of people and there I was with a back stage seat, camera in hand, listening to his wisdom. I also got to go back stage with musicians and hang out with rock stars, I spent a week on a tropical resort with Playboy models, cooked dinner for a Playboy Playmate. I got on the field with the athletes and shot an Indian wedding. Now let me tall you, those people know how to have a wedding. I’m so grateful for all the unique experiences I otherwise would never have had if it were not for photography.

In Conclusion

Being a photographer may not always be a cakewalk, but it's undoubtedly one of the most fulfilling careers out there. The blend of challenges and rewards is like a perfectly balanced recipe for a delicious life. So, if you're ready to embrace a career that combines your love for photography with the thrill of professional success, grab your camera, and embark on this remarkable journey. After all, in the world of photography, there's always room for one more cheeky click! 📸✨
